New Generation queens is the story of Zanzibar’s women’s soccer team. On an island where religion bars women from playing soccer, the Queens very existence resists cultural norms and complicates local assumptions about Islam and gender identity. When the girls qualify for a tournament on the mainland of Tanzania, they have a chance to leave the island for the first time and compete in front of scouts for Tanzania’s national team. Though forced to go home early after losing their first three games, the team returns to Zanzibar determined to share their pastime with others and to spread the message that you can be a woman and a Muslim and a soccer player.
