The African-Arab-Indian mixing on the island of Zanzibar has resulted in the taarab music genre. Untill a few years ago Zanzibar forbade women to publicly play an instrument under the influence of Islamic teachings. Mariam Hamdani, the first woman journalist of the island, created an orchestra composed solely of women eight years ago.
